After close observation of the bluejays just outside my studio window, I determined that their role among my backyard birds is law enforcement. They waste no time in alerting the community whenever an intruder is observed or whenever any “new” birds try to access the bird feeder at a designated meal time, clearly a breech of protocol.
The colorful foliage was created by painting a wild, patterned background as the first layer of paint and then covering it up (painting negatively) to reveal the leaves behind the bird. There are may layers of paint just behind the bird!
